Administrative agency

The KABEG (Krankenhaus Betriebsgesellschaft des Landes Kärntens) is the administrative agency for Villach Regional Hospital. As an institution incorporated under public law, KABEG administers the regional hospitals in Klagenfurt, Villach, Wolfsberg, Laas and Hermagor. With its balance sheet of € 1058 million in 2004 and more than 7000 employees, KABEG is the largest service provider in the state of Carinthia (Kärnten).

Basis of our activities

As one of the most modern and efficient public general hospitals in Austria, Villach Regional Hospital readily meets the treatment and healthcare needs of the population in Central and Upper Carinthia. Together with our “Villach model for patient-orientated quality management”, it is the hospital administration agency, KABEG, that provides us with our rationale. The “Villach model for patient-orientated quality management” is a structured collection of aim definitions, strategies and implementation instruments designed to ensure that Villach Hospital can continue to adapt itself to the needs of the ever more rapidly changing environment. Always at the centre of all our daily hospital routines are the needs of our patients and their relatives.

Your wellbeing is our chief concern

We place great stress on our motto: “Your wellbeing is our chief concern”. That we have adopted the correct approach has been confirmed “externally”: we have been granted the “Knewledge National Award” in the area of “Social Services” and have also been accredited by the Joint Commission International.

Some facts and figures

Villach Regional Hospital has 783 permanent beds: 734 in the hospital itself and 49 beds in the institute for chronically ill patients. We have a total of 11 different departments and four institutes. We deal with 111,765 admissions annually; of these, 44,765 are hospitalised and 67,000 are outpatient cases. Average duration of hospitalisation is 6 days. Villach Regional Hospital employs 1710 personnel, 1425 are effectively active, as 285 staff are either in part-time employment, on maternity leave or vacation etc. at any one time.

The Villach Regional Hospital has an annual budget of approximately € 120 million. Personnel costs constitute some € 60 million of this total, while another € 5 million is spent on investments. The remaining € 55 million are used to meet all other costs.

To ensure that it remains one of the leading state-of-the-art hospitals, Villach has invested around € 63,000,000 in reconstruction and new buildings in recent years. Further investments are planned for the future.

Training programmes

Located as it is in the area lying between Italy and Slovenia, Villach Regional Hospital also treats many patients from outside Austria. For this reason, we need to ensure that our personnel have the necessary intercultural and language skills. We thus offer a wide-ranging programme of staff training opportunities that is constantly being expanded as we consider that a high level of training and qualification is as important for our workforce as motivation and a good working climate.

Quality assurance

Quality assurance has been one of our major concerns at Villach Regional Hospital for many years. In February 2004, Villach Regional Hospital was the first acute sector hospital in Austria to be accredited in accordance with the international quality standards of the Joint Commission International. The quality standards of the Joint Commission International have been specifically drawn up for the healthcare sector: some 20,000 hospitals and medical institutes are currently certified to meet these standards. Villach Regional Hospital, its external Orthopaedic Clinic and the Institute for Clinical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnostics are now all accredited by the JCI.
