The hospital pharmacy

The duties and responsibilities of a modern hospital pharmacy include not only the prompt delivery of medication and other medical supplies to patients, but also continuous information to doctors and nursing staff regarding handling and use of pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, advice and assistance is given in commercial matters, thereby encouraging quality and cost awareness amongst the many employees in the hospital. The prescription of “your medicine” on one of the wards or out-patient departments is the end of a chain of organization and coordination activities combined with highly responsible “manual work” by the pharmacist, pharmaceutical assistants and druggists, all supported by modern equipment, machinery and IT systems.

The hospital pharmacy is responsible not only for purchasing and stock-keeping of medicines, bandages, diagnostic material etc, but also produces a number of preparations itself. These include creams, drops and infusions, as well as nutrient and pharmaceutical solutions individually prepared to meet the needs of specific patients. These are produced in close collaboration with the doctor, but subject to strict pharmaceutical quality and safety criteria.

For particular emergencies, the hospital pharmacy has rapid access to the most important medication kept in stock in a separate store room.
