Institute for Pathology

The Institute for Pathology is continually adapting in order to meet technical requirements and be in a position to respond to ever-increasing demands for cell and tissue biopsies, as well as operation preparations. Also included is molecular pathology with its increasing importance for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and infectious diseases.

As a teaching institution for pathology, the institute includes a laboratory for clinical microbiology and a cyto-diagnostic laboratory for gynecological cancer screening. The institute supplies not only the departments of the Villach Regional Hospital, but also the other hospitals and doctors in Upper Carinthia with a wide range of high-quality analysis necessary for the identification and treatment of diseases.

The organs and organ parts removed in operations, and the wide variety of tissue and cell biopsies are examined for pathological changes first visually and then under the microscope. Razor-thin, transparent dyed tissue slices or cell smears are prepared and evaluated. Modern operation strategies, and the treating doctor’s and patient’s desire for information as soon as possible, require rapid section diagnosis during the operation. A fresh tissue sample is deep-frozen, sectioned, dyed and evaluated under the microscope and the surgeon is informed of the diagnosis by telephone during the operation.
